Silver beach starfish – silver on the beach. I love the Starfish Story by Loren Eiseley, and so this post is about a silver starfish bangle. Loren Eiseley wrote a short poem about how a seemingly small action can make a difference. When we started to create jewellery I knew that we must have a starfish piece. This Sterling Silver Starfish sits on top of a chunky silver cuff. It’s a real showstopper of a piece. Here it is sparkling away atop a beautiful white stone tumbled by the sea.
The Loren Eiseley Starfish Story
As the story says: There were thousands of starfish on miles and miles of beach. One man alone could never make a difference. He smiled as he picked up the next starfish. Hurling it far into the sea he said, “It makes a difference for this one.”
Our Silver Beach Starfish
This is in part how we feel about our silver jewellery creations. Each one matters to us. Each one is different. Some different person is going to love that piece for its uniqueness. Consequently, each piece is created with love. Sometimes I think we’ve made a mistake, that something needs to be discarded. But then one of us will realise that actually what we see as its flaw is actually its beauty. And we work with it, file it, polish it. All of a sudden its a favourite. Our Medium Turret shell pendant is an example of this. It was supposed to be a large turret shell but I didn’t have enough molten silver to pour. Now we would never think of not offering both sizes of Turret pendants.
The silver beach starfish though, that’s a different story. We have loved working with this piece. As a result, we have the standard starfish which we use on bangles. Then, we have elongated one of its legs on the pendant version. That way, it hooks itself around the necklace most charmingly.
